As of May 5, 2016, the Commission has received a total of 398 cases. Of these, 112 cases have been reviewed. Individual applicants who contacted the Commission totalled 91 and 39 of these were seeking counselling. In addition, 71 individuals who have contacted the Motherisk Commission on their own were seeking a legal review as well.
Commissioner Beaman and Marian Jacko, Counsel on Indigenous Issues, attended the Annual Conference of the Association of Native Child and Family Service Agencies of Ontario in Sarnia on April 26th to 28th, 2016. The conference was focussed upon Reconciliation through Culturally Appropriate Practices. Both Commissioner Beaman and Ms. Jacko made workshop presentations describing the mandate and operation of the Commission and inviting advice from the attendees on how to best reach out to Indigenous Communities.
